Absent Students: What to do...
Dear Parents,
During the 2019 and 2020 school years, as a result of Covid, we offered Remote and Concurrent Learning options for students. For the 2021 school year, however, we are no longer offering those options for absent students. Since students are back in the classroom our focus during the school day is with those students who are present. This is a return to pre-Covid practices. Dividing attention between students at home and students in school does not benefit either group. Unfortunately, we know that Covid protocols mean that even a sniffle might lead to an absence. So, what does that mean for your child when he or she is forced to be absent?
- It's okay to contact your teachers to let them know you will be out especially if an extended absence is anticipated.
- If it is only going to be for a day it's really not necessary to email and we'll catch them up when they return.
- If your child will be out for longer than a day or two we will do our best to send home work that will help him or her to stay current; definitely reach out.
- Even if work is sent home students will not have access to teachers while they are teaching during the day.
- Please know that not all activities can be completed at home (e.g. labs or library activities). These activities will be either made up when a student returns or exempted if too much time has passed.
- You can always check the homework blog to keep up with work in math or reading (You may need to pick up your workbook or reading book if you don't have it).
- When students return they can catch up by going to see both teachers during WIN, extra help on Tuesday mornings, or maybe during recess.
Overall, we are hopeful that everyone is healthy and avoids these situations. When students are absent they will be given a reasonable amount of time to catch back up. Most importantly, when sick the best thing to do is focus on getting better and know that school work should never be a concern.
Thank you,
Mike and Chelsea
